1.5 Tonnes of bread and bakery waste diverted and counting…
Since we started selling our spirits in March this year we have diverted more than 1,5 tonnes of bread and bakery waste from landfill.
A modest achievement but one we think is worth celebrating. It also coincides with receiving a very welcome waste minimisation grant from the Dunedin City Council. We are using the grant to help us to increase production a notch or two. This means we can rescue more bakery waste from landfill.
We’d like to thank the DCC for their generous grant. We’d also like to thank KiwiHarvest for collaborating with us to source bakery waste that is not required by consumers; Blueskin Nurseries for allowing us to contribute our distillers mash solids to their commercial compost; and private landowners in the Mount Cargill area who generously allow us to harvest delicious Dunedin rainwater.
From now on, we’ll be making monthly, ‘tonnes of bakery products diverted from landfill’ updates to this site so you can see the impact you are having when you buy Dunedin Craft Distillers products. Every drop of Dunedin Dry Gin and Cacao Vodka that you enjoy helps to mitigate the carbon cost of bakery waste.
So, this Christmas, if you’re looking for sustainable, locally produced gifts, look no further than our delicious spirits! Handcrafted right here in Dunedin from precious bread and bakery surplus that would otherwise go to waste.
